Richard John
Richard John is a Professor and former Dean (Learning and Teaching) at Griffith University, Queensland, Australia. He has over 30 years’ experience in science education having held teaching and research positions at the University of Wollongong, Oxford University and the Smithsonian Institute.
At Griffith he is the Program Lead of Science on the GO! and the Griffith Science Education Alliance – Griffith’s science outreach programs. He is also the Project Lead for the Queensland STEM Education Network – a consortium of Queensland universities working with local schools to improve science learning outcomes for school students.
Richard is a Queensland Science Champion, a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) and the recipient of several prestigious awards for his educational contributions to science. These awards include: two Australian Awards for University Teaching; Australia’s Entrepreneurial Educator of the Year Award; the Australian Science Teachers’ Association Award for Service to Science Education; the Queensland Science Teachers Association Medal for Excellence in Science Education; the RACI Award for Chemical Education (Qld); the Peter Doherty Award for Excellence in Science and Science Education; and the Queensland-Smithsonian Fellowship Award.
He is the father of a five-year old and a six-year old – the inspirations for ‘Suzie the Scientist’!
He is the author of 60 international peer-reviewed research papers, the author of an undergraduate chemistry textbook and was the inaugural Director of the national science education program, Science by Doing, on behalf of the Australian Academy of Science.
